KEY POINTS:
- Chemistry and physics compliment each other in many ways. The expansion of the universe following the Big Bang is very much related to the concepts of enthalpy and entropy. The physical properties of substances and magnitude of intermolecular forces can only be explained through quantum mechanics and atomic theory.
- The various sections of the electromagnetic spectrum have a great deal of relevance to the disciplines of chemistry – particularly analytical chemistry. Flame tests, colorimetry, infra-red spectroscopy, chromatography, mass spectrometry – the list is rather exhaustive and all involve chemistry and physics combining to great effect.
- The environment and how to combat air pollution / minimise global warming are two areas which require chemists and physicists to collaborate. There is no doubt that the future of the human race on planet earth is very much dependent on solutions being found through dedicated scientists providing solutions to a myriad of issues – how to reduce CO2 levels, combat photochemical smog, or pre-empt severe climate events.
- Ultimately it will be the study of the chemical composition of far off moons and planets that will allow an alternative to planet earth to be put forward as a possible location for the human race to continue.
THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX:
- What mass of carbon dioxide is exhaled by the human population of earth on a daily basis?
- Where is the hole in the ozone layer right now? Can you explain the chemistry behind the breakdown of ozone?
